Plaster wall lights that paint into the wall

Cast from gypsum and left chalk-matte, a plaster wall light is made to be painted the same colour as the wall behind it, so the fitting reads as architecture rather than an object screwed on top. The surface has a faint bisque texture, a little like unglazed pottery, and the piece feels heavier than its size suggests. Most sit close in a half-moon or shell shape and wash light upward in a soft fan. Set one beside a bed or halfway along a hallway, and the room gains a low layer of warmth as the light fades.

What makes a plaster wall light disappear, and where does it work?

Plaster, or gypsum, wall lights are cast fittings finished to be painted, so the glow seems to rise out of the wall. Many are uplighters with a low glare wash that suits living rooms and stairwells, anywhere a single ceiling fitting leaves the corners flat. For a warmer metal note, our brass wall lights work the same layered trick in solid brass rather than plate, while glass wall lights give a lighter, more reflective look. I tend to mix them, since two or three modest pools of light beat one source overhead.

Choosing a plaster wall light

Check the bulb fitting (E27 or B22) and how far the light projects from the wall, so it clears a nearby frame or headboard. A broader uplighter suits a tall wall or a high ceiling, while a slimmer shape sits better on a landing. Fit a warm white bulb at 2700K for a soft, golden light rather than a clinical one, and choose a dimmable fitting, so it drops easily in the evening.
