Plug in wall lights for softer evening light

Some rooms only want a softer pool of light by evening, not a building project. These ask nothing of your walls. Run the flex to the nearest socket and you are done, no electrician, no chasing plaster. The braided fabric cord is part of the look here, so it sits happily on show down a painted wall. We rather like a swing-arm in solid brass beside the bed, the articulated arm pulled out over a book and the opal glass shade throwing a pool you can read by. A ribbed glass globe in brushed nickel feels quieter in a hallway, low on the wall where it softens the corners. Fit a warm white bulb (2700K) and the brass warms with it as the evening draws in.

What if a socket is out of reach?

Then a plug in light is simply the wrong tool, and that is no bad thing. These run from a switched outlet on a slim in-line switch, so the cable wants a socket within reach. Where the wall is bare, a rechargeable wall light charges over USB and runs cordless, and battery operated wall lights sit on a chimney breast or a stair return where no socket reaches.

How to choose the shade and projection

Check the fitting first (E27 or B22), then how far the light projects from the wall. A shallow projection reads neatly in a narrow hall. A deeper swing-arm reaches across a wider bedroom without crowding it. Matt black suits a darker scheme and antique brass a warmer one. A pleated linen shade diffuses the glow. Clear ribbed glass keeps it crisp. Choose a dimmable fitting if you can.
