Check the fitting. Most take an E27 screw or a B22 bayonet. Know whether it is hardwired or plug in, and how far the arm projects so it clears a tall sofa back. A slim half shade suits a narrow alcove. A broader linen shade holds its own on a wide, bare wall. If you want a finish that ages rather than flakes, choose solid brass over brass plated. Fit a warm white bulb (2700K) for an inviting light, and pick a dimmable fitting so you can take the room down low as the night draws in.
